Milan, July, 2020 – Luca Ruini is the new president of CONAI. He was appointed unanimously during the first meeting of the new Board of Directors of CONAI, which had already designated the new directors on 6 July in Milan, at the annual general assembly. Luca Ruini succeeds Giorgio Quagliuolo today: he will serve as president for the three-years term 2020-2022.
Mr Ruini is 55 years old and he is a native of Emilia-Romagna region. He has already been a member of the CONAI Board of Directors from 2002 to 2008 and from 2011 to 2017, sitting at all negotiating tables involved in the definition of the Italian system of Packaging Waste management, and leading CONAI’s Prevention Working Group.
Mr Ruini graduated in Electronic Engineering from the University of Bologna, specializing in microelectronic-management. Since 2008, he is Director of Security, Environment & Energy at the Barilla Group.
The Board also elected Angelo Tortorelli as Vice-president of the Consortium, representing the component of commercial users and distributors, and Domenico Rinaldini, representing the producers component.
Established by the 1997 Ronchi Decree , CONAI is a non-profit organization which now represents the response of business to a problem of collective interest such as the environmental one, ensuring the introduction of recycling and energy recovery of packaging waste throughout the country.
In 2019, the Consortium allowed 70% of packaging waste to be recycled: a total of 9 million and 560 thousand tons of packaging were recycled, out of the 13 million and 655 thousand that entered into consumption. If the recycling figures are added to those of energy recovery, the tons of packaging waste recovered exceeded 11 million, almost 81% of the consumption input.
